Clayton Unveils Net Zero Electricity Home

The Clayton net zero electricity prototype home was unveiled at the 2022 Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders Meeting in Omaha, NE in April 2022.

What does it mean to be net zero?

Greenhouse gasses, like carbon dioxide are constantly released into the atmosphere through human activity, such as burning fossil fuels, landfills, and household, commercial and industrial processes. Net zero refers to the balancing act of removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere equal to the amount of greenhouses produced. When we add no more greenhouse gases than what we emit, we achieve net zero.

Why is net zero so important?

Net zero is important because it's the most advantageous way to address climate change by reducing global warming. What we do today to limit the emission of greenhouse gases will have the most impact on our planet and economies in years to come.

Unveiling the Clayton Net Zero Electricity Home

Built with The Pulse floor plan, the net zero home was constructed with several energy-efficient upgrades and a solar roofing system. With all these upgrades combined, the home produces enough electricity to power itself to achieve net zero.

ENERGY STAR® Appliances. ENERGY STAR® is the government-backed symbol for energy efficiency, providing customers with products that provide energy efficient performance and savings.

LED Lights. Light-emitting diode (LED) is the most energy efficient and rapidly developing light technology. LED lights are more durable, offer better quality light and use at least 75% less energy.

LUX™ Windows with Argon. Made with low emissivity (low-e) coated glass and argon gas, LUX Windows minimize the amount of ultraviolet and infrared light that passes through the glass without compromising visible light.

22-21-50 Insulation Package. As one of the largest users of energy, added insulation allows the home's HVAC system to operate more efficiently, requiring less power and reducing the home's overall energy needs.

ecobee Smart Thermostat. The ecobee Smart Thermostat saves up to 26% on annual heating and cooling costs through advanced occupancy sensing technology, comfort settings and customizable schedules.

CertainTeed® Solar Shingles. Using High efficiency monocrystalline silicon solar cells to capture and concert maximum solar energy, the Apollo II solar shingles function as a roof, generate clean energy, while protecting against water intrusion.

Benjamin Moore® Low-VOC Paint. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that create ground-level ozone, a major component of smog. Low-VOC paint emits lower VOC gases than traditional paint.

Currently, ENERGY STAR® appliances, LED lights, LUXWindows, the 22-21-50 insulation package and the ecobee Smart Thermostat are the only energy efficient upgrades currently available to Clayton homeowners.
