A History of Excellence

In 1970, Jim Clayton, Clayton’s founder, decided to expand his young company by adding a home construction division to his already-successful home sales business. He located an old tobacco barn in the Halls community in Knoxville, TN, and transformed it into Clayton’s first official home building facility. Today that modernized facility is known as TRU Halls, and they’ve reached the milestone of constructing more than 50,000 homes.

Mike Duncan, regional vice president of the TRU division and one of several Clayton leaders whose career has included time working at TRU Halls, says, “In December, TRU Halls built our 50,000th home, marking an incredible milestone in our journey to Open doors to a better life. Fifty thousand families have made dinner, welcomed family and friends, celebrated birthdays and made memories in their home from TRU Halls.”

TRU® Homes

TRU Halls is one of six Clayton facilities that constructs the TRU series of homes. Among the most affordable homes in America, TRU homes have made the dream of homeownership attainable for more than 100,000 families over the last 10 years.

In addition, nearly all new TRU homes are built to eBuilt® standards. The most energy efficient homes Clayton has ever built, eBuilt homeowners can save up to 50% on their annual power bills1. The home is constructed to easily add a renewable solar energy system after purchase for even more savings. TRU Halls has constructed over 750 eBuilt homes since eBuilt’s debut on July 10, 2023.
